Black StainsCause: Excess Manganese
Manganese is a mineral commonly found in drinking water supplies. Considered a secondary contaminant to the EPA, manganese has no know negative health effects, and in small quantities is one of many minerals essential to the human body. Since manganese is a mineral found naturally in the ground, any water source from the ground, including wells and water supply companies, may be susceptible to sourcing excess manganese in the water.
Other Effects: Metallic taste

Iron is also a mineral found naturally in the ground so water sources from the ground may naturally contain excess iron. High iron is also an effect of iron pipe corrosion.

Rotten Egg Smell
Cause: Excess Sulfur/ Hydrogen Sulfide Gas.
That all-too familiar smell to many of us is the smell of hydrogen-sulfide gas produced by bacteria in the water. Those bacteria feed on sulfates (a type of sulfur) and can cause the formation of sulfuric acid which leads to corrosion. These bacteria can only live in oxygen-poor (anaerobic) environments.

Chlorine Taste
Cause: High Chlorine Levels
Chlorine is the most common form of microbe-controlling chemical used as a water additive in industry. Though concentration levels are tightly regulated for human water consumption, even small amounts of the chemical can still be tasted.

Hard Water
Cause: Excess Mineral Content
Hard water is caused by the presence of positively charged metal molecules known as cations. Cations are naturally forming and enter a water supply by slowly seeping through minerals inside an aquifer. It is most often not harmful to health, but can cause serious complications in water systems involving metal fixtures.
Other Effects: Scales or deposits in kettles, pans and water heaters

With the addition of oxidizing the cations, the use of CSP to isolate mineral molecules with the help of an optional water softener will help noticeably reduce or eliminate hard water problems.
Laxative Effects
Cause: Excess Sulfates
Sulfates occur naturally in many minerals and have been known to cause laxative effects when in high concentration in drinking water. Sulfates are also prevalent in many synthetic substances including fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, paper, soaps, and others. They also occur as a discharge into the air in many industrial settings. When spread around the environment and slowly leached into the ground, all these items can attribute to higher sulfate levels in ground water.
Other Effects: May be detected by taste in few cases.

Cloudy Look / Gritty Feel
Cause: Mud, silt or clay sediment in water
In some well water-sourced systems, when poor or no filtration methods are used “upstream” in the water system, sediment may result at the point of extraction. Corroded iron pipes may also be a source of sediment in your water.

If your water system utilizes iron pipes and you are noticing large rust particles in your water or filter, have your pipes inspected for excessive rust and corrosion damage.
Organic 'Tea' Color
Cause: High concentration of tannins
Tannins are naturally-occurring organic compounds that can be the product of fermentation in mother nature. Water filtered through decaying vegetation and peaty soil is a major source of tannins.
Other Effects: May stain laundry, leave a bitter after-taste, or have a musty odor.
Solution: Oxy Blast® peroxide treatment
Breaking down organic material is what Oxy Blast does best. Oxidation of tannins allows it to be reduced to other compounds and then easily filtered.
High Sodium Content
Cause: Water supply near high-sodium sources
Many people associate sodium with salt and sometimes even use the two interchangeably. The correlation between locations near or around large amounts of salt and the sodium content of their water is understandable knowing that salt is made of only sodium and chloride. High sodium-containing water sources can exist in coastal areas or originate from the effects of human living such as ice-melt runoff, leaching from landfills, human or animal waste disposal, water softeners and other sources. High sodium content in supply water leads to an imbalance of electrolytes. Electrolyte imbalance effects can range from mild to life-threatening.
Other Effects: High sodium in the water can have some laxative effects if in extreme concentrations. Those known to have a sensitivity to sodium must take extra care in consuming high sodium-containing water.
